Police retrieve Fabergé pendant inspired by James Bond from man accused of swallowing it

WELLINGTON, New Zealand Authorities in New Zealand have successfully recovered a Faberg pendant from a man accused of swallowing it at a jewelry store, after monitoring his bowel movements for six days. Police confirmed on Friday that the allegedly stolen item, valued at 33,000 New Zealand dollars ($19,000), was retrieved naturally on Thursday night without the need for medical intervention.

The 32-year-old suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, was taken into custody after allegedly consuming the intricate octopus-themed pendant at Partridge Jewelers in Auckland on November 28. Police say he was arrested inside the store shortly after the incident.

The pendant is a limited-edition Faberg egg inspired by the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy, which revolves around a plot involving jewel smuggling and a counterfeit Faberg egg. A photo released by police showed the pendant still attached to its long gold chain, with the price tag intact.

Officials stated that both the necklace and the man will remain in custody. The suspect is scheduled to appear in Auckland District Court on December 8. He previously appeared on November 29, declining to enter a plea on the theft charge. Following the incident, police maintained a 24-hour watch over him until the pendant was recovered.

Inspector Grae Anderson emphasized the need for continuous supervision, saying, Given this man is in police custody, we have a duty of care to continue monitoring him considering the unusual circumstances.

According to the store, the rare pendant is one of only 50 made. Crafted from gold, decorated with green enamel, and adorned with 183 diamonds and two sapphires, the 8.4-centimeter (3.3-inch) egg opens to reveal an 18-carat yellow gold octopus, featuring white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes. The design pays tribute to the villain from the Octopussy film.
