King Charles' decision to strip his brother Andrew of royal titles and remove him from Royal Lodge, due to his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, represents a dramatic fall from privilege. Once regarded as Queen Elizabeths favored son, Andrew has consistently denied any misconduct, yet the consequences of his actions persist.
On Monday, December 1, following the King's instructions, Andrew Mountbatten Windsors name was officially removed from both the prestigious Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order Honors. Despite this, questions remain about whether this will fully cleanse the royal family's image.
Andrew Lownie, historian and author of Entitled: The Rise and Fall of The House of York, discussed the ongoing impact on the monarchy and what may come next. Andrew attended Easter Matins at St Georges Chapel in Windsor Castle on April 20, 2025, as the Epstein Files Transparency Act mandates that the Department of Justice release documents related to the Epstein case by December 19.
Lownie suggested that while a significant amount of material involving Andrew exists, not all of it may be released. Previous revelations have already highlighted the lengthy association between Andrew and Epstein.
Regarding Andrews departure from Royal Lodge, Lownie noted that the former prince is asserting his lease rights and seeking compensation, signaling that his exit may not be as straightforward as expected.
Lownie also recalled Andrews appearances with Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in 2000, noting shared interests among Andrew and Trump, including women, golf, and business. He added that Andrew was once assigned to assist Trump during a state visit, evidence of a previously close relationship.
Concerns raised by officials in January 2015 about Andrews behavior reportedly reached Queen Elizabeth, though the Queen may have chosen to protect her son. Lownie emphasized that the Queen was well-informed and surrounded by discreet advisors with intelligence backgrounds.
King Charles delay in stripping Andrew of honors, Lownie suggested, reflected a belief that public attention would shift and the issue might dissipate. The scandal surrounding Andrew intensified following a 2019 TV interview defending his friendship with Epstein. He lost military titles in 2022 and senior royal status, and retired after being sued by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual assault as a minor.
Despite denying all allegations, Andrew is now relinquishing his royal titles and honors amidst continuing scrutiny. Lownie highlighted that Prince William recognized the reputational damage and took action as public pressure mounted. Family tensions, particularly with Prince Harry, remain unresolved.
Financially, Andrew and Sarah Ferguson reportedly accumulated substantial debts, some covered by private funds, though the overall cost of their lifestyle, including security and travel, remains significant. Lownie stressed the need for greater transparency regarding royal finances.
With palace protection removed, Andrew could face investigation and potential charges related to sexual misconduct or financial offenses. While imprisonment seems unlikely, there is speculation he might consider leaving the country to avoid legal consequences, although he continues to deny wrongdoing.
Looking forward, Lownie believes the monarchy can recover. By addressing Andrews situation and demonstrating accountability, Prince William and his family can restore public confidence. The monarchys enduring popularity offers a platform for a more focused, modernized approach, and Andrews scandal may inadvertently accelerate these reforms.
