Prince Harry expressed his views on Donald Trump during a high-profile television segment. The Duke of Sussex appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, engaging in comedic sketches and delivering a playful jab at the former U.S. president.
The skit parodied Hallmark holiday movies, featuring a fictional title, The Gingerbread Christmas Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska. Harry made a grand entrance, humorously suggesting he was auditioning for the part. When Colbert asked about his presence, the Prince quipped, You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies, and youre clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not? Colbert replied, Look, I wouldnt say were obsessed with royalty. Harry then shot back, Really? I hear you elected a king.
This jest alluded to a post Trump made on his social media platform Truth Social, where he referred to himself as a king, prompting nationwide protests under the No Kings slogan against perceived authoritarian tendencies.
Harry further joked about his commitment to landing the fictional Hallmark role, claiming he would record a self-tape, fly himself to an audition, settle a baseless lawsuit with the White House all the things you people in TV do. Colbert countered, Hey, I didnt do any of those things, to which Harry responded with a grin, Maybe thats why youre canceled.
The humor comes after reports that Harry felt personally slighted by Trump during the former presidents UK state visit. Trump praised King Charles for raising a remarkable son without acknowledging Prince Harry, a move the Duke reportedly interpreted as a deliberate snub. Sources say Harry felt betrayed seeing his family seemingly comfortable with someone who has criticized him and Meghan for years, leaving him concerned about potential repercussions, including the fear of deportation.
Earlier in 2024, Trump confirmed during a press conference that he would not offer protection to Harry, stating, I wouldnt protect him. He betrayed Queen Elizabeth II. Thats unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me.
Analysis: Prince Harry’s Subtle Jabs at Donald Trump Reflect Lingering Tensions
Prince Harry’s appearance on *The Late Show with Stephen Colbert* showcased his playful humor, but beneath the comedic sketches lay a deeper, unresolved tension with former President Donald Trump. The Duke of Sussex's jabs at Trump, particularly referencing his "king" comment, seemed to highlight a complex relationship between the two figures, steeped in personal and political differences.
The light-hearted banter, which included a dig at Trump's self-declared monarchy, reflects the ongoing discord stemming from Trump’s past remarks and actions towards Harry and his family. The subtle humor used by Harry could be interpreted as a method of publicly addressing grievances without directly confronting them. His comments regarding Trump’s UK state visit earlier this year and his perceived betrayal by the former president underline the emotional weight behind these exchanges.
While the Duke’s remarks during the television segment may have been crafted to entertain, they also underscore the tension between his royal family ties and the complicated dynamic with Trump. These moments, albeit lighthearted, offer insight into the complexities of Harry’s current position as he navigates life outside the royal fold, yet remains entangled in the political and media currents surrounding his family.
