Prominent Gaza militia leader Yasser Abu Shabab killed in anti-Hamas operation

Yasser Abu Shabab, a leading Palestinian militia figure opposing Hamas in Gaza, has been killed. He led the Popular Forces, a group with dozens of fighters operating near the southern city of Rafah in Israeli-controlled areas.

The Popular Forces stated that Abu Shabab was shot while "trying to settle a family dispute" and rejected claims that Hamas was responsible, despite the group previously accusing him of cooperating with Israel.

Earlier, Abu Shabab's Bedouin tribe, the Tarabin, claimed he was killed "by the resistance," accusing him of betraying the Palestinian cause. Other reports suggest his death may have been the result of an internal power struggle.

Hamas released a statement saying the outcome Abu Shabab faced is "the inevitable fate of all who betray their people and homeland," without claiming direct responsibility for the killing.

Israel's Army Radio cited a security source indicating that Abu Shabab succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, though the hospital denied treating him.

The Popular Forces pledged to continue Abu Shabab's mission, vowing to fight until "the last terrorist is removed from Gaza" and a "secure future" is achieved for the people who seek peace.

In June, Israels Prime Minister confirmed that the country was supplying weapons to Palestinian clans in Gaza opposing Hamas, including the Popular Forces, though the militia denied receiving arms. The group has also faced accusations of looting humanitarian aid and alleged links of some members to the Islamic State, which it has rejected.

Since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas nearly eight weeks ago, Abu Shabab had been among anti-Hamas leaders maneuvering for influence in the second stage of the proposed Gaza peace plan by the US. This phase includes forming an interim government, deploying an international stabilization force, Israeli troop withdrawals, and Hamas disarmament. The first phase involved the return of hostages, prisoner exchanges, partial Israeli withdrawal, and increased humanitarian aid.

The conflict in Gaza escalated after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, resulting in around 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages. Since then, Israeli strikes have killed more than 70,120 people in Gaza, according to Hamas-run health authorities.
