Ral Rocha, the owner of Miss Universe, has reportedly been charged by Mexico's Attorney Generals Office with trafficking drugs, weapons, and fuel. Mexican newspaper Reforma reported on Wednesday, November 26, that Rocha allegedly transported these items between Guatemala and Mexico.

The Attorney Generals Office (FGR) claims Rocha leads a criminal group that smuggles fuel via the Usumacinta River and then transports it overland into Mexico. According to the report, in August, a request for Rocha's arrest was submitted by an agent from Mexicos Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime. Authorities reportedly conducted raids at several properties connected to him.

Records allegedly show that Rocha contributed 2.1 million pesos (approximately $114,405) to the criminal organization. The arrest warrant, obtained by Reforma, claims that Rocha maintains connections with politicians and officials across all levels of government to carry out their operations, including the sale of hydrocarbons, narcotics, and trafficking of large quantities of weapons.

It was reported that Rocha spoke with the FGR in October to negotiate a plea deal, offering information in exchange for immunity from prosecution. The Miss Universe organization has not yet commented.

Previous Scandals within Miss Universe

Rocha's legal troubles follow prior controversies within the Miss Universe organization. Earlier this year, pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil made headlines for publicly insulting Miss Mexico Ftima Bosch. Several contestants showed support for Bosch by walking out of a pre-pageant event. Following the incident, Rocha minimized Itsaragrisils role in the pageant, emphasizing respect and dignity for women.

Bosch later won the competition and highlighted her commitment to using her voice to inspire change. I will put my voice and the power in the service of others because nowadays we are here to speak up, to make change, she said.

Additional Legal Developments

On the same day, news emerged that a warrant was issued for Miss Universe co-owner Jakapong Anne Jakrajutatip in Bangkok due to her failure to appear in court for a fraud case. Officials reportedly consider her a flight risk. Jakrajutatip resigned from the organization in June. The Miss Universe Organization has clarified that her legal case is separate from the pageant's operations.

Commentary: The Growing Legal Troubles of Miss Universe's Owner Raúl Rocha

The recent legal troubles of Raúl Rocha, the owner of the Miss Universe Organization, have cast a shadow over the pageant's reputation. Rocha has been accused by Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office of trafficking drugs, weapons, and fuel, allegedly orchestrating the smuggling of these items between Guatemala and Mexico. The charges bring forward significant concerns regarding the operations of the organization he controls. Not only is Rocha facing criminal charges, but reports suggest his involvement with organized crime syndicates and links to politicians and government officials. His case is currently under investigation, and authorities have already launched raids at properties connected to him, further deepening the gravity of the allegations.

While Rocha’s legal issues are unfolding, it’s important to consider the broader implications for the Miss Universe brand. The scandal surrounding him follows a series of other controversies, including a public feud involving pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil and Miss Mexico Fátima Bosch earlier this year. The fact that Rocha’s criminal activities allegedly contribute millions of pesos to criminal organizations raises troubling questions about the transparency and ethics within the organization’s leadership. The pageant may need to address these concerns to restore its credibility and to reassure participants, sponsors, and the public.

As for Rocha’s strategy, the attempt to negotiate a plea deal with the Attorney General’s Office by offering information in exchange for immunity from prosecution signals his awareness of the severity of the situation. However, his future in Miss Universe remains uncertain. The organization has yet to make any public statements regarding his legal issues, and it is likely that his involvement in the scandal will continue to affect the pageant’s reputation in the months to come.
