Rescue by lifeguards of dog caught in rip current off San Diego coast

SAN DIEGO A black Labrador mix named Sadie had a narrow escape after being swept into the ocean by a powerful rip current off San Diegos coast. The adventurous pup had slipped away from her owners home during a football game last month, according to a post by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department on social media.

While Sadies owners tracked her along the shoreline using an Airtag on her collar, surfers in Ocean Beach spotted the dog caught in the current near the jetty and alerted local lifeguards. A U.S. Coast Guard vessel joined the search as Sadie vanished into the channel.

Lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge took to personal watercraft and spent over an hour scanning the waters. As their search time was about to end, Alldredge noticed a potential sighting far offshore.

We approached and realized it was her, and excitement hit immediately, Alldredge recounted. They quickly reached Sadie, who was visibly exhausted but thrilled to see her rescuers. She was definitely happy to see us, Smerdon said.

Sadie was located about half a mile (0.8 km) from South Mission Beach and was safely transferred to a surf boat that returned her to shore. There, her relieved owners were waiting.

In a video message, Alexis Barcellos and Brandon Valdez expressed their deep gratitude. Barcellos recalled that just as the search was being called off, a radio announcement confirmed Sadie had been found alive, prompting tears of relief.

Sadies paws and nails had sustained injuries while trying to climb the jetty, requiring her owners to carry her for about a week. Despite this, the dog has been in high spirits, recently enjoying her first trip to a pet store for a treat and taking a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) walk.

We are just beyond grateful she is home safe with us, Barcellos said.
