Rescue Mission Saves Almost 30,000 Illegally Trafficked Animals in One Month

A groundbreaking global operation, Operation Thunder 2025, has resulted in the rescue of nearly 30,000 trafficked animals over the course of a month. The large-scale mission, coordinated by law enforcement agencies worldwide, not only dismantled numerous illegal wildlife trafficking networks but also uncovered various new threats facing endangered species.

Among the major discoveries, authorities reported an alarming rise in the trafficking of bushmeat into Europe. Notably, Belgian authorities intercepted meat from primates, while Kenyan officials seized over 400 kilograms of giraffe meat. In Tanzania, officers recovered zebra and antelope meat, along with their skins. In total, authorities worldwide confiscated a record-breaking 5.8 tons of bushmeat during the operation.

The operation also exposed a significant uptick in marine wildlife trafficking, with over 245 tons of protected marine species seized, including thousands of shark fins. In addition, law enforcement agencies intercepted nearly 10,500 insects and arthropods, such as butterflies, spiders, and beetles, in illegal trade.

Furthermore, authorities in Angola reported a substantial seizure of ivory, contributing to the ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade in endangered animal products.

The illegal plant and timber trade also saw a significant increase, with over 10 tons of live plants and plant-based products being confiscated. Illegal logging, which is estimated to account for up to 30% of the global timber trade, remains a major concern for authorities worldwide.

While the operation led to numerous arrests and animal rescues, it also provided crucial intelligence that will aid in mapping the global criminal networks involved in wildlife trafficking. Increasingly, these networks are leveraging cryptocurrency and digital assets, making investigations more complex. The information gathered during Operation Thunder 2025 will bolster future efforts to protect vulnerable species and ecosystems globally, helping law enforcement agencies better tackle these challenges in the future.
