Shane Smith walked alongside a custom-built, hexagonal orange-and-yellow inflatable raft designed specifically for a small group of passengers: astronauts rescued after landing far offshore. "When inflated, it functions more like a stand-up paddleboard than a traditional life raft. The floor is rigid, allowing for medical treatments or chest compressions without being waterlogged," said Smith, a former command chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve 920th Rescue Wing.
Smith explained additional features: "It has a canopy to shield passengers from the water and ballast bags to facilitate helicopter hoisting. With the right equipment, we can sustain four critically injured patients at a high level of medical care for up to 72 hours."
Commercial Spaceflight Rescue Initiative
Smith co-founded Operator Solutions, a startup claiming to be the first commercial human spaceflight rescue company. Based at Melbourne Orlando International Airport, the company partners with Axiom Space on private astronaut missions to the International Space Station.
During the Ax-4 crewed launch in June, Operator Solutions deployed a Lockheed C-130A Hercules, two Sikorsky S-76 helicopters, boats, personal watercraft, and over 50 search-and-rescue personnel to be ready for offshore astronaut recovery. Previously, these operations were handled by the Department of Defense. "When commercial astronauts started flying, relying on military special ops for every launch wasnt sustainable," said co-founder Brandon Daugherty.
Military Experience Shapes Operations
Daugherty, a former 920th Rescue Wing pararescue team leader, brought extensive experience in combat search-and-rescue missions and hurricane response. He moved to Florida in 2015 to help develop NASA's Commercial Crew Program astronaut rescue and recovery protocol, now active for SpaceX Dragon and Boeing Starliner flights.
Operator Solutions began in 2020 and quickly grew through its partnership with Axiom. The companys operations center at the Aerospace Center includes workstations, a countdown clock, and storage for parachutes, watercraft, and specialized equipment. Launch preparations involve staffing up to 50 contract workers, all current or former military veterans.
High-Risk Rescue Expertise
Smith emphasized the dangers of offshore jump rescues, particularly with hazards from spacecraft such as toxic gases and jagged debris. Rescue personnel use carbon-fiber self-contained breathing apparatus when approaching spacecraft to assess chemical risks.
Future Plans and Expansion
Operator Solutions has raised about $1 million and aims to secure an additional $4.5 million. Potential future clients include cruise lines, NASA, disaster response teams, the U.S. Navy, and commercial space manufacturers. The company also supported Sierra Spaces air-drop tests for the Ghost logistics vehicle, which aims to deliver supplies to global locations from orbit.
Additionally, Operator Solutions is collaborating with the University of Central Florida College of Medicine to develop emergency medical training for commercial spaceflight, with Dr. Victor Vargas serving as medical director.
"We tackle complex, high-risk problems and develop solutions to integrate into the space industry," Daugherty said.

Author's Commentary: Commercial Spaceflight Rescue Enters a New Era
The emergence of Operator Solutions marks a pivotal shift in how astronaut safety is managed for commercial missions. Having observed their operations, it is clear that the company is filling a gap once handled exclusively by the U.S. military, applying decades of search-and-rescue expertise to a commercial context.
The design of their hexagonal inflatable raft demonstrates a practical understanding of both medical needs and offshore hazards. Its rigid floor, canopy, and ballast systems show that high-level care can be delivered safely in open water, potentially sustaining critically injured astronauts for up to 72 hours.
Operator Solutions’ model also reflects the growing collaboration between private space companies and specialized rescue providers. With a fully equipped operations center, veteran staffing, and ongoing partnerships with NASA and commercial operators like Axiom Space, the company exemplifies how private initiatives are professionalizing astronaut recovery.
Looking ahead, the combination of emergency medical training, high-risk rescue experience, and plans for expansion suggests a sustainable future for commercial spaceflight support. This development underscores the broader trend of privatization in space infrastructure, where safety protocols are evolving to match the pace of industry growth.
