Residents of the Pacific Northwest on high alert as Arctic air moves south following severe flooding

An intense Arctic cold front is advancing southward, with a significant drop in temperatures expected throughout the weekend, extending into the southern United States by Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued cold weather warnings, reaching as far south as Montgomery, Alabama. Temperatures are forecast to fall to 22F (approximately -6C) by late Sunday night into Monday morning. To the east, Savannah, Georgia, will experience temperatures dipping to 24F (around -4C) during the same period.

As this Arctic air mass spreads across the nation, the Pacific Northwest is still reeling from severe flooding caused by a powerful atmospheric river. The flooding has prompted widespread evacuations as rainfall accumulated up to a foot (30 cm) in parts of western and central Washington. The heavy rains swelled rivers, flooding towns and causing dramatic rescues from homes and stranded vehicles.

Although floodwaters are gradually beginning to recede, authorities warn that the threat remains. River levels will stay high for several more days, and the risk of levee failures and mudslides is still significant. Local officials have been involved in numerous rescue operations, and several highways have been shut down due to debris and landslides. More rain is expected on Sunday, keeping residents and emergency services on high alert.
