The River Thet, recently coated with a heavy layer of foam, will undergo restocking with 3,000 fish as part of a river restoration project. In October, the foam covered a significant portion of the river in central Thetford, Norfolk, and several dead fish were discovered.
The Environment Agency announced that it will introduce a mix of native one-year-old fish species, including roach, dace, and chub, into the river on Monday. Officials emphasized that restocking at two locations is essential for restoring the river's ecological balance.
Teams from the agency have conducted thorough water-quality assessments, and ongoing monitoring will continue in the following months to track the fish's survival and the overall recovery of the river.
The River Thet is a rare chalk stream, a habitat type with significant global importance, with nearly a third of the world's chalk streams located in the East of England.
The local conservation group, Thetford River Group, noted that the foam incident in October mirrored a similar problem that occurred in December 2024.
