Rubio says Ukraine talks were 'productive' but more work is needed

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described discussions with Ukraine aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict as productive, while noting that "more work remains." The meetings took place in Florida and included a Ukrainian delegation led by Rustem Umerov, the countrys new chief negotiator and secretary of the National Security Council.

Also participating were President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Trumps son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Witkoff is scheduled to travel to Moscow next week for further discussions. Umerov stepped in after the resignation of Ukraines previous top negotiator, Andriy Yermak, following an anti-corruption raid on his residence.

The talks follow a period of intense diplomatic activity over the past two weeks, triggered by the leak of a 28-point US peace plan. The leaked plan surprised Ukraine and its European allies for appearing to favor Russia, which invaded Ukraine nearly four years ago.

Speaking in Hallandale Beach, Florida, Rubio emphasized: "Its not only about ending hostilities. Its also about establishing conditions for Ukraines long-term prosperity. We made progress today, but more work is required." He added that the objective of the peace talks is to secure a Ukraine that remains "sovereign, independent, and prosperous."

At the start of the meeting, Umerov commented: "We are discussing Ukraines future, its security, preventing further aggression, ensuring prosperity, and planning for reconstruction." He acknowledged US support, stating: "The US is hearing us, supporting us, and working alongside us." He later described the discussions as "productive and successful," with Rubio echoing that sentiment, calling them "very productive and useful."

On Air Force One, Trump told reporters the talks were "progressing well," expressing optimism about reaching a potential deal to end the conflict. He confirmed that Witkoff, and possibly Kushner, would travel to Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin to discuss the revised peace plan.

Ukraines President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on social media: "It is essential that talks maintain a constructive dynamic, addressing all issues openly while safeguarding Ukraines sovereignty and national interests." He also expressed gratitude toward the US and Trump for their efforts to facilitate peace.

One major unresolved topic remains the status of Ukrainian territories currently annexed or controlled by Russia. A source close to the Ukrainian delegation described the Florida talks as "challenging," but confirmed that all sides are seeking constructive solutions.

Zelensky is expected in Paris on Monday for meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, a key ally.

The conflict has caused tens of thousands of military and civilian casualties and displaced at least seven million people since Russias invasion on February 24, 2022. The wider conflict traces back to 2014, following the ousting of Ukraines pro-Russian president, Russias annexation of Crimea, and its backing of armed uprisings in eastern Ukraine.
