The M23 rebel group, believed to have the backing of Rwanda, has declared its pullback from the city of Uvira in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This move comes as peace talks continue to struggle in the region, with little progress toward a lasting resolution.
The rebels' advance into Uvira had intensified the conflict, bringing the violence to the edge of neighboring Burundi, which has had a military presence in eastern Congo for several years. The situation raised concerns about the potential for a larger regional conflict. According to the United Nations, approximately 64,000 refugees have fled from Congo to Burundi since the beginning of the month, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Reports also indicate that shells have landed in the Burundian town of Rugombo, located near the border, further escalating tensions. Both Congo, the United States, and U.N. officials have accused Rwanda of providing support to the M23 group, which has grown significantly since 2021, now estimated to have around 6,500 fighters. This marks a significant increase from the hundreds of fighters they had just a few years ago.
Eastern Congo is home to over 100 armed groups, all competing for control of the regions vast mineral resources, with M23 being one of the most prominent. This ongoing violence has contributed to one of the world's largest displacement crises, with over 7 million people forced to flee their homes, as reported by the U.N. refugee agency.
