A 74-year-old sailor, Lyall Babington, tragically lost his life when he became entangled with a powered winch while sailing on the Solent, according to an accident investigation report.
Babington, originally from New Zealand, was commanding his yacht, Mollie, when the incident occurred near the Needles while en route to Poole on August 5. The preliminary investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) stated that his hand was caught in the rope, which then drew him progressively tighter onto the winch drum.
The report noted that the inboard winch had a known defect and that no local emergency stop mechanism was installed on the aft winches. Social media posts from Babington documented his stops in ports such as Istanbul and Tangiers during his journey from New Zealand, where he took on unpaid crew members at various points.
Two of the crew had joined the yacht just a day before the incident, while a third crew member had been intermittently aboard for approximately five months. According to the MAIB, at around 11:00 BST, Mollie was sailing in the Western Solent from West Wittering, West Sussex, toward Poole, Dorset, when the storm jib sail needed to be raised.
As Babington attempted to clear the rope from the inboard winch, it unexpectedly began to turn, trapping his right hand and winding it around the winch drum. He was pinned in place, suffering severe injuries to his arm and hand, along with trauma to his head and chest.
After several attempts, the crew managed to stop the winch using the control switch, but by that time Babington was unresponsive. They issued a mayday call, prompting the dispatch of an RNLI lifeboat and a coastguard helicopter. The RNLI crew boarded the vessel and worked to free him. During the rescue, the winch suddenly activated and released him onto the deck. He was pronounced dead at 13:00.
The investigation revealed that the winch had a known defect in its controls, occasionally remaining powered even after the switch was released. The MAIB reported that no corrective measures had been implemented prior to the accident.
Further information can be found through the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.
Analysis: Safety Failures in the Solent Sailing Incident
The tragic death of 74-year-old sailor Lyall Babington highlights critical safety gaps in recreational sailing operations. According to the MAIB report, the fatal incident was directly linked to a known defect in the inboard winch, which lacked a local emergency stop mechanism. This equipment failure, combined with the absence of corrective maintenance, created a high-risk scenario.
Another contributing factor was the composition and experience of the crew. Two members had joined only a day before, and one had intermittent experience aboard. The report indicates that Babington was handling a storm jib sail alone when the winch unexpectedly activated, demonstrating the dangers of operating complex sailing equipment without fully trained personnel immediately available.
The incident underscores the importance of rigorous equipment checks, proper crew training, and functional emergency controls on all winches. Immediate safety improvements could prevent similar tragedies, including retrofitting winches with emergency stops and conducting regular maintenance on known defective equipment.
