Authorities are conducting a search for a British man who went overboard from a cruise ship off the coast of Tenerife. The Spanish coastguard confirmed it has been leading rescue operations for the 76-year-old since 09:48 local time (09:48 GMT) on Thursday.
The incident occurred on the Marella Explorer 2, operated by TUI, while the vessel was positioned just northwest of Tenerife. Marella Cruises reported that the man was "observed entering the water during the ship's journey to La Gomera" and stated that it is providing support to his family while coordinating with local authorities.
The coastguard added that the ship assisted in the search before docking at Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the early hours of Friday. According to local media, the cruise was traveling from Madeira in Portugal to the Canary Islands at the time of the incident. The BBC has reached out to the UK Foreign Office for comment.
The Malta-registered Marella Explorer 2 accommodates up to 1,814 passengers across 14 decks and 907 cabins, according to information provided on TUIs website.
Commentary: Search Efforts for Overboard British Passenger Continue
The search for the 76-year-old British man who went overboard from the Marella Explorer 2 cruise ship off the coast of Tenerife is ongoing. Spanish coastguard operations began promptly at 09:48 local time on Thursday, with efforts continuing into Friday. The cruise ship, operated by TUI, had been en route from Madeira, Portugal, to the Canary Islands when the man was observed entering the water during the journey to La Gomera.
The authorities have confirmed that the Marella Explorer 2 assisted in the search before docking at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Local media reports suggest that the Spanish coastguard is leading the operation, with support from the cruise line. Marella Cruises has expressed its commitment to supporting the family of the missing man and working closely with the relevant authorities. While the situation remains tragic, the quick response of both the ship's crew and the coastguard should be acknowledged as vital in such circumstances.
As the investigation continues, there are still questions surrounding the details of how the man ended up overboard, and whether any safety measures were fully implemented. The Foreign Office has yet to issue a statement, but it is expected that more information will emerge in the coming days. This incident highlights the potential dangers of cruise travel, even on well-regulated ships, and underscores the importance of continuous vigilance and timely action in rescue operations.
