The mother of a soldier who lost his life while serving in Afghanistan has expressed immense pride following the unveiling of a street named in his memory.

Sgt Craig Brelsford, originally from Chilwell, Nottinghamshire, was killed in action on 8 September 2007 when Taliban fighters ambushed his patrol during the early morning hours.

The newly named Brelsford Close was inaugurated by Broxtowe Borough Council and Keepmoat Limited on the Sherwin Gardens estate in Bramcote.

Susan Brelsford commented, "He sacrificed his life to protect others, and I am thrilled that his memory will continue through this street."

Sgt Brelsford served with the 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) and was posthumously awarded the Military Cross for his courage during the attack, which claimed the life of another soldier and critically injured two others. At the time, he was attempting to save a wounded colleague.

Broxtowe Mayor Robert Bullock shared his satisfaction in honouring Sgt Brelsford, stating, "It took several years to reach this moment, partly due to finding the right location and navigating the bureaucratic process. He was a natural leader, deeply respected, and it was a privilege to speak with his mother about him."

Adam Sharpe, Managing Director at Keepmoat, which developed the estate, said that Sgt Brelsfords heroism will be remembered for generations thanks to the commemorative sign.

Author's Commentary: Honouring Sacrifice Through Memory

The decision to name a street after Sgt Craig Brelsford is a powerful acknowledgment of his service and sacrifice. More than a decade after his death in Afghanistan, the gesture ensures that his bravery is remembered within the community he called home.

Sgt Brelsford’s actions on 8 September 2007, when he risked and ultimately gave his life to save a colleague under enemy fire, exemplify the courage recognized by the Military Cross he received posthumously. Naming Brelsford Close is not only a tribute to him but also a tangible connection for residents to the legacy of those who serve.

The involvement of Broxtowe Borough Council, Keepmoat Limited, and the soldier’s family highlights the collaborative effort required to preserve such memories. As Mayor Robert Bullock noted, the process took years, emphasizing the care taken to appropriately honour Sgt Brelsford’s life and character.

Ultimately, Brelsford Close stands as a symbol of community respect and national gratitude. For Susan Brelsford, the street represents more than recognition—it is a permanent testament to her son’s sacrifice and leadership, ensuring his story continues to inspire future generations.
