The latest exhibition at Gladstone Gallery in Seoul presents a unique twist on traditional ceramics, showcasing the work of three contemporary artists who intentionally distort classical forms. Their approach reflects deeper shifts in South Korean society, using imperfection as a lens to rethink cultural norms.
Among the featured artists, Lee Hun-chungs reinterpretation of the iconic moon jar stands out. His pieces deliberately display uneven rims, fractures, and evident repairs, transforming flaws into focal points. By embracing these imperfections, Lee seeks to breathe new life into a revered art form.
When you challenge established values, you create room for something fresh, Lee explained. Confronting these longstanding ideals of beauty allows for innovative expressions and unexpected possibilities.
