Suicide bombing in northwest Pakistan claims life of police officer

Deadly Suicide Attack Hits Police in Northwestern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD A suicide bombing targeting a police vehicle in northwest Pakistan, near the Afghan border, claimed the life of at least one officer and injured several others on Monday, local officials reported.

The incident occurred in Lakki Marwat, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to police official Ashfaq Khan, who did not provide additional details.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement condemning the attack.

In a separate development, suicide attackers and armed assailants struck a military installation overnight in Nokandi, a district in Balochistan province, which has been affected by ongoing insurgency, local media reported. The Balochistan Liberation Front, a separatist group, claimed responsibility, stating their fighters targeted a Frontier Corps office and engaged in a firefight with security forces. The military and government have not commented yet.

Pakistan has seen a rise in violent incidents in recent years, with authorities often blaming Balochistan-based separatists and the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which operates independently but maintains ties with Afghanistans Taliban government. The increase in attacks has heightened tensions between Islamabad and Kabul, as Pakistan accuses the TTP of carrying out operations from Afghan territory since the Talibans 2021 takeover. Afghanistan rejects these claims.

Relations worsened after the Taliban government accused Pakistan of an Oct. 9 drone strike in Kabul. Cross-border clashes ensued, causing fatalities among soldiers, civilians, and militants, until a cease-fire was brokered by Qatar on Oct. 19. Subsequent talks in Istanbul concluded without resolution. Iran and Saudi Arabia have offered to assist in reviving dialogue. Pakistans Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated last week that Islamabad welcomes mediation by friendly nations but insists Kabul curb TTP activities and prevent militants from using Afghan soil for attacks inside Pakistan.
