Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, attended a state banquet at Windsor Castle on Wednesday evening, honoring German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Bdenbender. For the occasion, the Duchess chose a timeless ensemble, pairing her cherished Aquamarine Tiara with a sleek black gown.
Over the years, Sophie has frequently worn the Aquamarine Tiara, including most recently at the French state banquet in July. She was accompanied by Prince Edward and the Prince and Princess of Wales as she arrived at the event.
Alongside her tiara, the Duchess displayed her yellow ribbon with the Royal Family Order of King Charles III, awarded to her in July in recognition of her service to the monarch. Earlier this summer, Sophie paired the same tiara with a white gown.
State banquets typically feature an array of elegant gowns and sparkling tiaras from the royal family. Attendees at Windsor also included Queen Camilla wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Northern Ireland tiara, the Princess of Wales with the Orient Circlet tiara, Princess Anne in the Aquamarine Pineflower tiara, and the Duchess of Gloucester adorned in Queen Marys Honeysuckle tiara.
The evening marked Sophies return to the state banquet scene, as she and Prince Edward were absent from the previous event in September, held for U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, due to their official visit to Japan representing King Charles in Tokyo and Osaka.
Author's Commentary: Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, at Windsor State Banquet
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, made a notable return to the state banquet circuit at Windsor Castle, hosting German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Büdenbender. Her choice of the Aquamarine Tiara, paired with a sleek black gown, reinforced her preference for timeless, elegant style. This marks another appearance with the tiara, previously worn in July at the French state banquet.
The Duchess was accompanied by Prince Edward and the Prince and Princess of Wales, highlighting the continuing presence of senior royals at such formal occasions. In addition to her tiara, Sophie displayed the yellow ribbon of the Royal Family Order of King Charles III, an award received earlier this year, signaling her ongoing recognition by the monarch.
State banquets at Windsor featured a full display of royal jewels and gowns, including Queen Camilla in the Girls of Great Britain and Northern Ireland tiara, the Princess of Wales in the Orient Circlet, Princess Anne in the Aquamarine Pineflower tiara, and the Duchess of Gloucester in Queen Mary’s Honeysuckle tiara. Sophie's attendance, following a previous absence due to an official royal visit to Japan, underscores her renewed engagement in ceremonial duties.
