Known as the glass magicians, GlitterLab has served prestigious clients like Swarovski, Frances Galeries Lafayette, and Londons iconic Harrods. Their website highlights the companys unique ability to shape glass into forms that are normally impossible, emphasizing that the entire production process is handcrafted and closely guarded as a trade secret, making each ornament one-of-a-kind.

In todays world where mass-produced goods are everywhere and inexpensive, something made from scratch here in Europe, with care and dedication, is genuinely appreciated by customers, said company owner Barbara Mostowska.

Despite its modest workshop appearance, GlitterLab has been operating in Czstochowa, a town of 200,000 in southern Poland, for over 80 years. The company was founded by Mostowskas grandparents after World War II, and she is now the third generation managing the family business. Originally, the workshop produced glass cigarette holders and tiny bottles for flavoring cakes, before moving on to small baubles and hand-blown ornaments like swans, mushrooms, and pinecones.

With expansion into the U.S. market, GlitterLab began creating molded ornaments including angels and Santa Claus figures. Their designs also reflect local heritage; Czstochowas monastery is home to the revered Black Madonna, and pilgrims historically purchased souvenirs from local artisans. We are the heirs of that tradition, the company says. These techniques arent something you can simply learn theyre in your DNA.

The combination of artisanal craftsmanship, modern techniques, and savvy marketing has proven lucrative. One of their Harrods-exclusive creations, the Yellow Floral Bauble, is priced at 125 (around $168). Mostowska hopes the ornaments are not only seasonal decorations but cherished home pieces year-round. Our products are like jewelry for the home, she explains.

The creation process begins with a clients drawing, which is first sculpted in soft clay. Adjustments are made until the design perfectly captures the clients vision. Only then are materials selected to bring the shape to life. Senior designer Mariola Koa, who has been with GlitterLab for 42 years, says the most rewarding moment is when a client approves a design without corrections. Its the greatest joy a true measure of success, she says.

GlitterLabs artisans work with glass as well as resin, wood, crystals, and metal, allowing them to craft ornaments that defy conventional shapes. Each piece also tells a story and evokes nostalgia. For instance, a teddy bear holding a golf club is described as a time machine to a happy childhood when candy floss tasted sweetest straight from sticky fingers.
