Tugboats are among the most versatile vessels at sea. Built to perform tasks ranging from guiding massive ships through tight harbors to conducting demanding offshore operations, these vessels deliver exceptional force. Their strength is measured using a standard known as bollard pull, determined by connecting a towline to a fixed bollard and calculating how much force the tug can apply within a set time frame.
While smaller harbor tugs may reach only a few thousand pounds of pull, the most powerful ocean-class vessels reach extreme figures. Leading the field is the Island Victory, capable of producing an extraordinary 477 tonnes of bollard pull, followed by four other giants that push engineering limits to the maximum.
Island Victory
Delivered in 2020, the Norwegian-flagged Island Victory remains the most powerful tug on the planet. Classified as a multipurpose offshore vessel, it can handle heavy installation work, anchor operations, and deep-sea tasks. Measuring 405 feet, it is equipped with a helipad and accommodations for 110 crew members.
The vessels remarkable strength is powered by a system of Rolls-Royce Bergen engines generating 42,880 horsepower. Combined with controllable-pitch propellers and multiple thrusters, the Island Victory delivers unmatched bollard pull, making it capable of towing even the worlds largest naval ships.
MV Far Samson
Built in 2009, the Far Samson held the title of the worlds strongest tug before the arrival of Island Victory. Designed for anchor handling and offshore construction, it recorded an impressive 423-tonne bollard pull during classification trials.
Powered by twin Rolls-Royce Bergen B32 engines producing 35,900 horsepower and supported by azimuth and tunnel thrusters, the vessel still ranks among the most capable tugs ever constructed. With space for around 100 personnel, it also set environmental standards by dramatically cutting nitrogen oxide emissions.
Boka Falcon
Delivered in 2019 to Boskalis, the Boka Falcon surpasses the 400-tonne pull mark. Classified as a multipurpose offshore construction ship, it measures 306 feet and is fitted to handle heavy subsea tasks.
Its propulsion system includes twin MAK 16M32C engines supported by booster motors for a combined output of 29,502 horsepower. Along with standard towing equipment, it carries a 150-ton subsea crane and deep-water remotely operated vehicles for missions down to 3,000 meters.
Boka (Lewek) Fulmar
The Boka Fulmar, sister ship to the Boka Falcon, produces an impressive 402-tonne bollard pull. Added to the Boskalis fleet in 2019, it shares nearly identical dimensions and engine configuration with the Falcon.
Powered by MAK 16M32C engines and booster units, the Fulmar is designed as an anchor handling and DP2 construction vessel. Its advanced dynamic positioning system allows precise work in extreme offshore conditions.
Aurora Saltfjord
The Aurora Saltfjord completes the list with a bollard pull rating of 397 tonnes. Built in 2011, it operates as an anchor handling tug and service ship, featuring a hybrid propulsion setup that can run in multiple modes.
With two Wartsila Wichmann engines producing a combined 26,000 horsepower and seven thrusters, the 312-foot vessel is equipped for deepwater trenching, ploughing, and offshore support. Onboard spaces accommodate up to 70 personnel, complete with recreational and operational facilities suited for long missions.
Analysis: The Power Behind Modern Tugboats
The tugboat industry has seen significant advancements in both technology and performance, particularly with the introduction of new models capable of exceptional bollard pull. The current leaders, such as the Island Victory, have pushed the limits of what is possible in terms of sheer strength and operational versatility. This shift highlights a broader trend in maritime engineering, where vessels are no longer limited to basic harbor tasks but are now central to demanding offshore operations.
Island Victory, with its 477-tonne bollard pull, stands as the undisputed champion of tugboats, a testament to the engineering breakthroughs that allow these vessels to carry out complex tasks. The tug's hybrid propulsion system, combined with Rolls-Royce Bergen engines, allows it to perform operations that were previously considered unachievable. This is indicative of a larger trend within the industry—tugboats are evolving from traditional harbor vessels to multipurpose offshore platforms.
However, the competition remains strong. Vessels like the MV Far Samson and Boka Falcon, both capable of impressive pulls over 400 tonnes, showcase the continued innovation within the tugboat sector. Their ability to perform anchor handling and subsea construction tasks reaffirms their critical role in modern maritime operations, where precision and power are essential for successful missions.
The future of tugboats appears to be focused not only on raw power but also on versatility and environmental considerations. The Far Samson’s reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions, for example, sets a benchmark for future designs, ensuring that the powerful engines driving these vessels do so with less environmental impact.
Ultimately, these tugboats are more than just workhorses—they are highly specialized vessels that contribute to complex offshore industries, supporting everything from deep-sea construction to the towing of naval ships. Their capabilities will likely continue to expand as new technologies are integrated into their designs, further pushing the boundaries of what is possible at sea.
