Thieves steal €90,000 worth of snails from French farm

A farm in northern France, known for supplying gourmet restaurants, has suffered the theft of snails valued at 90,000 (79,000; $104,000). L'Escargot Des Grands Crus, located in Bouzy near Reims, reported that both its fresh and frozen snail stock was completely taken, marking a significant setback just before the holiday season.

The robbery occurred overnight on Monday, with thieves cutting through a border fence to gain access to the farm buildings. However, the authorities were only notified later in the week, according to Franceinfo. Police are now investigating, while the farm works to restock and fulfill end-of-year orders from clients.

Snails, or escargot, are a traditional French delicacy typically cooked with garlic butter or wine. Sales of escargot usually surge in December as many households and restaurants prepare for Christmas and New Year's festivities.

"This is certainly not the kind of news we wanted to share during the holiday period," the farm stated on Thursday. They described the theft as "a shock and a real blow to the entire team" and confirmed efforts are underway to replenish their inventory for the season.

The farm supplies Michelin-starred restaurants, including Les Crayres in Reims, as well as delicatessens and private clients. Images released after the incident show shelves and refrigerators almost entirely emptied of snail products.

"A whole section of finished products was stolen, along with raw materials from my laboratory," said Jean-Mathieu Dauvergne, the farm's manager. "It was my end-of-year stock. We had precisely what we needed to get through the holidays without any concern."
