A London-based museum has been recognized as Europes finest, largely due to its inclusive approach for young visitors. Young V&A, an extension of the Victoria and Albert Museum, has been awarded the 2026 Council of Europe Museum Prize for its efforts to engage and empower children.
The prestigious prize, presented for nearly five decades, honors museums that make significant contributions to the appreciation of European cultural heritage, human rights, and democracy.
Home to the UKs largest collection of childhood-focused items, Young V&A features beloved displays such as an intricate dollhouse collection, a life-size Joey the War Horse puppet, and the original Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve. Its three primary galleriesPlay, Imagine, and Designcater to visitors of all ages. Babies can explore textures, shapes, and colors at eye level, while older children can engage more deeply with the exhibits.
Chosen by the Council of Europes Culture Committee on 2 December in Paris, the museum stood out for its ability to combine playful experiences with educational content, addressing themes like empathy and sustainability. The Bethnal Green institution has also been commended for including children with special educational needs and disabilities.
Luz Martnez Seijo, a representative of the Museum Prize Committee, described Young V&A as exceptional in engaging visitors with topics such as human rights, equality, participation, and cultural democracy. She emphasized that the museum empowers young people, particularly those from disadvantaged areas, providing experiences that foster confidence and active participation in democratic society.
In addition to its permanent collections, Young V&A hosts temporary exhibitions. The upcoming Wallace & Gromit and Friends exhibition, opening in February 2026, will explore the world of Aardman stop-motion animation. Children can also express their creativity in dedicated workshop and performance spaces.
The award will be formally presented at a ceremony in Strasbourg in April 2026.
