Thomas Markle, the father of the Duchess of Sussex, is currently in a critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery, according to his son.
The 79-year-old was rushed to a hospital in the Philippines on Tuesday after suddenly falling seriously ill at his residence. He spent Wednesday evening in the intensive care unit following a three-hour surgical procedure earlier that day. A second surgery is expected to remove a blood clot.
I took my father to a nearby hospital where he underwent several scans, and the doctors confirmed that his life was in immediate danger, said his son, Thomas Markle Jr. We were quickly transported by ambulance with sirens blaring to a larger medical center in the city. He has now had emergency surgery. I ask that people worldwide keep him in their thoughts.
Thomas Jr. also urged the Duchess of Sussex to show some compassion toward her father during this critical time.
Mr. Markle has been estranged from Meghan since her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018 and has struggled with long-term health issues. He previously revealed that his daughter was upset when he participated in paparazzi photos before her wedding and expressed a wish to meet his grandchildren.
Before Meghans wedding at Windsor Castle, Mr. Markle suffered two heart attacks, preventing him from traveling from Los Angeles to London. As a result, the King walked Meghan down the aisle. In 2022, Mr. Markle experienced a stroke that left him unable to speak for several months.
Thomas Jr. emphasized the seriousness of his fathers condition, saying, He is literally fighting for his life.
Mr. Markles sister, Samantha, 61, noted that years of stress and health struggles have left their father more vulnerable. He has endured a lot, including two heart attacks, a stroke, and even an earthquake. I am praying he has the strength to survive this, she said.
Author's Analysis: Thomas Markle's Critical Condition
The recent hospitalization of Thomas Markle, father of the Duchess of Sussex, underscores the ongoing health challenges he has faced over the past decade. At 79, his emergency surgery in the Philippines and the need for a second procedure highlight the severity of his current condition.
Estranged from Meghan Markle since 2018, Mr. Markle's health crises—including multiple heart attacks and a stroke—have compounded family tensions. Statements from his son, Thomas Markle Jr., emphasize the immediacy of the threat to his life and call for global attention and compassion from the Duchess.
This incident also sheds light on the vulnerability of older individuals dealing with chronic health conditions while navigating public and family pressures. The Markle family’s public statements convey both the personal urgency of the situation and the broader implications for family dynamics in high-profile lives.
