Unknown people donate $1.7 million to 88-year-old veteran for retirement from supermarket job

After a video of 88-year-old veteran Ed Bambas working at a Michigan Meijer supermarket went viral, people across the globe came together to create a retirement fund for him. The fundraiser has now raised $1.7 million, allowing Bambas to finally step away from his job.

Bambas retired from General Motors in 1999 but lost his pension when the company went bankrupt. Following the death of his wife Joan, he returned to the workforce to cover expenses and medical bills. His story captured widespread attention and inspired strangers to help secure his financial future.

The veterans story reached Australian social media influencer Sam Weidenhofer through a comment on one of his videos. He, along with Detroit-based influencer Mike McKinstry, tracked Bambas down at his checkout counter in Brighton, Michigan. We were looking for a friendly older man and instantly recognized Ed when we saw him, McKinstry said.

Bambas shared that he had never used platforms like TikTok or Instagram and still relies on a flip phone. It came out of the clear blue. Ive never been on those programs, he said, reflecting on the sudden attention. Despite losing his pension in 2012 and facing financial struggles after his wifes death in 2018, Bambas continued to work long hours at the supermarket. Im fortunate God gave me a strong enough body to stand for eight, eight and a half hours a day, he said.

Weidenhofer explained the motivation behind the fundraiser: No 88-year-old in America should have to work because they need to. That breaks my heart. The viral video of Bambas at work prompted the creation of a GoFundMe campaign that has now reached $1.7 million, although Bambas is not yet aware of the total amount.

The fundraisers description highlights Bambas perseverance: Despite everything, Ed shows up every day with quiet dignity, strength, and perseverance. His story is a stark reminder that many seniors, especially veterans, face tremendous challenges just to survive.

Bambas remains guided by the memory of his wife, visiting her gravesite daily for strength and comfort. I try very hard to go to her gravesite every day and say hi... It helps me get through my day it really does, he said.
