Unusual Jupiter-Sized Object Discovered Orbiting Dead Star

A mysterious celestial body, roughly the size of Jupiter, has been discovered orbiting a pulsar in the late stages of its life cycle. This strange object has caught the attention of astronomers due to its peculiar composition and the unusual nature of its orbit.

The pulsar, a highly magnetized neutron star that emits beams of electromagnetic radiation, appears to have stripped much of the atmosphere from its companion, which was once a massive star. This could be an example of what is known as a "black widow" system, where the pulsar slowly consumes the material from a nearby star.

However, scientists are puzzled by the presence of a high concentration of carbon around the object. Typically, carbon and oxygen are produced during similar phases of stellar evolution, but this object's atmosphere contains an unusually high amount of carbon and significantly less oxygen than expected. This anomaly raises questions about the history and composition of the system.

One hypothesis is that the system might have resulted from a merger between two white dwarfs one made of helium and the other of carbon-oxygen. But even this theory does not fully explain the peculiar concentration of carbon found around the object. As a result, researchers are left to wonder about the true origins of the object and how it came to possess its unusual atmospheric characteristics.

Although scientists have a clearer picture of what the object looks like now, its past remains a mystery. The artist's impression below illustrates the strange, lemon-shaped planet as it orbits the pulsar, giving us a glimpse into this enigmatic system.
