Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has successfully formalized Syrias entry into the US-led coalition against ISIS, marking a significant step in the countrys counter-terrorism efforts. The announcement signals a new era of open military cooperation, with Syrian security forces now coordinating directly with US Central Command operations targeting extremist groups.
This collaboration represents Syrias first major public partnership with the US against ISIS, although there had been previous, smaller-scale cooperation. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US CENTCOM, emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating that the operation ensures gains against ISIS are permanent, preventing the group from regenerating or conducting attacks globally.
Following the fall of the Assad regime, Syrias security apparatus had to be rebuilt almost entirely. The previous controlling faction, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, had developed a militarized structure intended for combat against the regime rather than for governance. Over time, Syria trained thousands of new soldiers, police, and other security personnel, with the results now becoming apparent.
President al-Sharaa recently visited Washington, and after discussions with US President Donald Trump, Syrias participation in the US-led coalition, officially called Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve, was confirmed. This task force operates under the broader US Central Command.
CENTCOM reported that between November 24-27, US and Syrian forces jointly located and eliminated more than 15 ISIS weapons caches in southern Syria. The operations involved airstrikes and ground detonations in the Rif Damashq province, demonstrating a new level of cooperation in regions near Damascus where the US had not previously operated openly.
Historically, US involvement in Syria was concentrated in the east, supporting Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces and maintaining a small presence at Tanf while backing rebel groups. These former rebel units have since been integrated into Syrias new interior ministry forces within a formal military division. The US now works alongside these security forces to conduct counter-ISIS missions more effectively, sharing critical intelligence and enabling more precise operations.
SANA, Syrian state media, reported that several ISIS operatives were captured during joint operations in northern and western Idleb. The Interior Ministry confirmed the seizure of weapons, ammunition, explosives, and improvised devices. Brig. Gen. Ghassan Bakir, head of Internal Security in Idleb, noted that the raids targeted ISIS cells in Dana and surrounding areas and uncovered the involvement of some members in civilian killings near Maarrat Misrin. Two suspects were killed resisting arrest, while others were detained and handed to judicial authorities.
CENTCOM highlighted that the combined operations destroyed over 130 mortars and rockets, multiple firearms, anti-tank mines, materials for improvised explosives, and illegal drugs. Admiral Cooper reiterated the commitment to remain vigilant, emphasizing continued efforts to dismantle ISIS remnants across Syria.
Author's Analysis: Syria’s New Role in the US-Led Anti-ISIS Coalition
The formalization of Syria’s participation in the US-led coalition against ISIS marks a historic shift in regional security dynamics. After years of fragmented engagement, Syrian security forces are now coordinating openly with US Central Command, reflecting a consolidation of counter-terrorism capabilities.
Joint operations between November 24-27, targeting southern Syria, demonstrate the tangible results of this cooperation, with over 15 ISIS weapons caches neutralized. These operations, conducted near Damascus, indicate a new operational scope for US forces beyond their traditional eastern bases.
Syrian Interior Ministry reports confirm the capture of ISIS operatives and the seizure of significant weapon stockpiles in Idleb, highlighting the ongoing dismantling of terrorist networks. The integration of former rebel groups into formal security divisions has enhanced the effectiveness of these missions.
From a strategic perspective, this partnership not only strengthens counter-ISIS efforts but also establishes a framework for sustained intelligence sharing and operational precision. The combined focus on both southern and northern Syria signals a broader commitment to preventing ISIS resurgence and securing critical areas near urban centers.
Overall, Syria’s new role in the coalition represents both a practical advancement in counter-terrorism and a symbolic step toward renewed international military collaboration, setting the stage for more coordinated operations in the region.
