Venezuela accused the United States of unilaterally halting its migrant repatriation flights and attempting to "challenge the sovereignty of its airspace," following a social media post by former President Donald Trump suggesting the nation's airspace should be "entirely closed."

In a statement released Saturday, Venezuela's government demanded "full respect" for its airspace in response to Trumps post. The statement described the message as "a hostile, unilateral, and arbitrary action, violating fundamental principles of international law and forming part of an ongoing policy of aggression against our nation."

Trump's post on Truth Social called for all airlines, pilots, drug traffickers, and human smugglers to treat Venezuelan airspace as completely off-limits. This appeared to signal intensified U.S. pressure on Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro.

The White House did not comment on Trumps post, leaving it unclear whether this represented a new official policy or a continuation of his campaign messaging against Maduro. U.S. operations in the region have included multiple strikes on small vessels accused of transporting drugs, along with a buildup of naval forces in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. These strikes have resulted in more than 80 deaths since early September.

Following the Federal Aviation Administration's warning about heightened military activity, international airlines began canceling flights over Venezuela last week. Three U.S. carriers reported that they had already avoided Venezuelan airspace for some time. While the FAA's authority is limited to the United States and its territories, it frequently issues global flight warnings for areas affected by conflicts or military operations. Civilian aircraft in Venezuela were urged to "exercise caution" due to escalating security concerns.

Venezuela emphasized that "no authority outside the national institutions has the right to interfere with or restrict the use of national airspace," citing ICAO regulations. The government also stated that U.S. actions had "unilaterally suspended" repatriation flights for Venezuelan migrants.

The U.S. government does not recognize Maduro as the legitimate leader of Venezuela and has charged him with narcoterrorism. The Trump administration increased pressure through military measures, including bomber flights near Venezuela and the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford, marking the largest U.S. force buildup in the region in decades. "Operation Southern Spear" involves nearly a dozen naval ships and approximately 12,000 service members.

Bipartisan calls for oversight of U.S. strikes in the area have intensified, following reports that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth allegedly issued a verbal order to eliminate all crew members during a September 2 attack on suspected drug traffickers. Senate Armed Services Committee leaders, Republican Roger Wicker and Democrat Jack Reed, announced plans for thorough oversight to verify the details.

Trumps administration has considered both military and non-military approaches, including CIA covert operations authorized by the president. Public reports indicate that Trump and Maduro have spoken, though the White House did not comment on the discussion.

Analysis: Rising Tensions Over Venezuelan Airspace

The recent statements from Venezuela reflect growing friction with the United States over control of airspace and the handling of migrant repatriation flights. Caracas has framed former President Donald Trump's social media post as a direct challenge to its sovereignty, emphasizing that unilateral actions violating international law will not be tolerated.

Trump's call to close Venezuelan airspace for all flights, including commercial and illicit operations, signals an intent to intensify pressure on Nicolás Maduro. While the White House has remained silent, the overlap with ongoing U.S. military operations in the region, including naval deployments and strikes on suspected drug traffickers, underscores the potential for escalation.

International airlines have already adjusted routes following FAA warnings, highlighting the practical implications of heightened military activity on civilian aviation. Venezuela’s insistence on adherence to ICAO regulations reinforces its position that foreign authorities cannot restrict national airspace or interfere with repatriation flights.

The situation is further complicated by U.S. non-recognition of Maduro and ongoing legal and military measures under previous administrations. Congressional scrutiny of recent military actions, along with reports of extreme engagement orders, indicates both domestic and international pressure to clarify U.S. policy in the region.

In summary, Venezuela’s response underscores a broader geopolitical standoff where airspace control, international law, and military presence intersect, raising the risk of heightened confrontation if unilateral measures continue.
