As tensions escalate with the United States, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro demonstrated his commitment to the nations citizens during a public event on Monday. Speaking passionately, he declared unwavering loyalty to Venezuela and its people, echoing a promise once made before the late commander Hugo Chavez.
"Just as I pledged my devotion to Chavez before his farewell, I assure you total loyalty, even at the cost of my own life and peace," Maduro said. "I will never abandon you."
The president addressed the crowd gathered outside the presidential palace, coinciding with a parade celebrating newly elected Venezuelan officials. Following his speech, Maduro danced to a song featuring the message "No war, yes peace," which incorporated excerpts from his own words.
The announcement comes amid heightened friction with the Trump administration, which recently labeled the Cartel de los Soles a foreign terrorist organization, accusing Maduro of leading ita claim he denies. In response to U.S. military activity in the Caribbean and Pacific, Venezuelas National Assembly has convened to establish a commission investigating multiple strikes on suspected drug vessels, resulting in 83 casualties under Operation Southern Spear.
Diplomatic engagement between the two leaders may be on the horizon, as Maduro and President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Sunday, though the conversations specifics remain undisclosed.
