Volunteers have been assisting in clearing plastic biobeads from Camber Sands following a spill from a water treatment facility.
Southern Water has deployed new equipment to accelerate the removal of biobeads that were discharged into the sea from a wastewater plant. In a recent incident, approximately 10 tonnes of plastic pellets entered the ocean near Eastbourne via a 3.4 km (2.1 mile) pipeline after a fault occurred in a treatment tank.
The beads were carried ashore along Camber Sands in East Sussex, triggering a significant cleanup effort. Southern Water identified the 40-mile stretch of coastline between Eastbourne and St Mary's Bay in Kent as the area most at risk for further bead deposits.
To enhance removal efforts, the company has introduced 12 battery-powered sieves for faster sorting. Additionally, it has invested in three new high-powered vacuum and sorting machines, known as Nurdle machines, for ongoing beach cleaning operations. Repairs to the malfunctioning tank responsible for the spill are ongoing.
The release occurred during heavy rainfall after a screening filter failed. The defective tank was noticed on 28 October, though it was initially unclear if any pellets had escaped. Authorities have described the incident as serious, and approximately 80% of the beads on the beach have already been collected.
Residents are advised to wear gloves while handling the pellets, and pet owners should prevent animals from ingesting them. A spokesperson from the Environment Agency confirmed Southern Water's admission of responsibility and emphasized that enforcement action will be pursued if necessary. Coordination continues with Rother District Council and other responders to manage the cleanup at Camber Sands.
During the operation on 9 November, the nonprofit organization Nurdle used vacuum equipment to recover biobeads. Rother District Council has stated that additional measures will be taken to address any new beads washing ashore. Volunteers, Southern Water, and other groups are continuing manual cleanup efforts between spring tides to protect the delicate strandline environment.

Analysis: Accountability and Cleanup Progress at Camber Sands
From my assessment, the response to the biobead spill at Camber Sands has combined volunteer action with expanded operational measures by Southern Water. The deployment of battery-powered sieves and high-capacity vacuum machines has accelerated recovery, with authorities reporting that around 80% of the pellets have been removed from affected beaches.
The confirmed release of approximately 10 tonnes of plastic pellets originated from a wastewater treatment facility fault during heavy rainfall. Southern Water has acknowledged responsibility, and repairs to the defective tank are ongoing. The Environment Agency has classified the incident as serious and stated that enforcement action remains an option.
Based on official statements, monitoring continues along the 40-mile coastline identified as at risk. Coordination between Southern Water, local councils, nonprofit groups, and volunteers remains active to address any additional deposits and to protect sensitive coastal areas during cleanup operations.
