A repeat offender has been imprisoned for causing the death of a 97-year-old man following a money demand at his Dundee residence. Tandy Swinton, 44, was found guilty of culpable homicide after William Lambie passed away five weeks after being assaulted in his flat in April of last year.

Swinton pushed Mr. Lambie, who weighed only five stones at the time of his death, resulting in a fall that inflicted severe injuries ultimately leading to his death.

She received a prison sentence of six years and nine months and will remain under community supervision for three years after release. Initially charged with murder, Swinton was convicted of the lesser charge after a four-day trial at Edinburghs High Court.

The court heard that Swinton had previously threatened Mr. Lambie with a knife four years earlier. Her criminal record includes over 20 convictions for offenses such as theft, shoplifting, assault, and robbery. Judge Lord Harrower noted that Swinton acted "recklessly regarding the potential for harm" and displayed no remorse for her actions.

During the trial, friends described Mr. Lambie as a devout Christian who often quoted Shakespeare and served as an inspiration to fellow members of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Dundee.

Following the attack, Mr. Lambie underwent surgery at Ninewells Hospital, was later transferred for rehabilitation, and eventually moved to a nursing home, where he passed away on 26 May last year.

The proceedings revealed that Swinton had previously served three years in prison for threatening and robbing Mr. Lambie in 2020. She was also jailed for 18 months in 2022 after coercing another elderly man, aged 81, to withdraw 300 from a bank for her.

Analysis: Repeat Offender Sentenced After Fatal Assault

The conviction of Tandy Swinton underscores the ongoing risks posed by habitual offenders targeting vulnerable individuals. At 44, Swinton has a lengthy criminal history, including over 20 prior convictions for theft, assault, and robbery, highlighting a pattern of escalating criminal behavior.

Her actions led directly to the death of 97-year-old William Lambie, who was frail and weighed only five stones. The court determined that Swinton's reckless behavior and lack of remorse were central factors in the culpable homicide verdict, which replaced the initial murder charge after a four-day trial.

The sentence of six years and nine months, with three additional years of community supervision, reflects judicial consideration of both the severity of the crime and Swinton’s persistent threat to elderly residents. This case also emphasizes the importance of protective measures for vulnerable individuals and monitoring repeat offenders to prevent similar tragedies.
