Zelensky talks peace plan with US diplomats

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on X that he held a phone conversation with US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to review the current status of Ukraines peace initiative. According to Zelensky, the talks also included participation from Ukrainian officials Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security Council, and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov.

The discussions followed ongoing negotiations between the Ukrainian delegation and the US envoys in Florida, which began on Thursday. Zelensky stated that the conversation covered essential issues aimed at halting the conflict and reducing the possibility of another large-scale Russian offensive, as well as addressing concerns about potential noncompliance from Russia based on past behavior.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine remains committed to constructive engagement with the United States in pursuit of a sustainable peace. He noted that both sides agreed on upcoming steps and formats for continued dialogue. The president also expressed appreciation to US President Donald Trump for the intensity of the diplomatic efforts.

He added that he expects a detailed in-person briefing from his team, as not all matters could be discussed by phone. Zelensky stressed that every element of the peace, security, and reconstruction plan must be practical and effective.

The update follows statements from Witkoff and the US State Department indicating that Washington and Kyiv reached an understanding regarding a future security framework and deterrence measures. They noted that the outcome of the conflict ultimately depends on whether Moscow demonstrates a genuine commitment to a lasting peace.

Russia initiated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and President Vladimir Putin continues to demand significant concessions from Kyiv.
