The enchanting world of Wicked is set to grow even richer and more colorful. Gregory Maguire, the author whose 1995 novel sparked the Broadway sensation and later a Universal film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is returning to Oz with a prequel novel that delves into the early life of the Good Witch.
Titled Galinda: A Charmed Childhood, the new book from HarperCollins is scheduled for release on September 29, 2026. Serving as a companion to the bestselling Elphie: A Wicked Childhood, which explored the origins of the Wicked Witch, this volume focuses on Galinda, revealing the girl behind her bubbly and seemingly superficial persona.
The book's synopsis describes Galinda as the youngest of four children in a high-born family facing financial hardship. Pampered yet overlooked, her natural grace offers promise in district dance competitions. However, these pursuits obscure the mounting discontent of local merchants who disapprove of her familys business tactics. Immersed in the comforts and timid insecurities of childhood, Galinda initially lacks both the insight and desire to navigate lifes complexities. Yet as her father skillfully maneuvers through rivalries, Galinda gradually moves toward a life that may lift her beyond her proud but challenging upbringing.
William Morrow, the books imprint, is offering limited deluxe hardcover editions with special features such as stenciled edges and decorative endpapers, available while supplies last.
The cinematic success of Wicked: For Goodwhich set records with a $147 million domestic opening and $223 million worldwidehas inspired Universal to explore further stories in Oz. Despite Grande and Erivo stepping away from their iconic roles, Universal CMO Michael Moses confirmed to Vulture that the studio is actively planning an Oz-related cinematic universe. Because of Wickeds success and dedicated fanbase, we feel a responsibility to explore how this universe can continue, Moses said. We havent fully mapped it out yet, but work is underway.
The film Wicked 2 already offered glimpses into Galindas youth, including an early birthday scene where she receives a wand. When unable to perform magic as expected, Galinda pretends a rainbow appeared due to her powers. Her parents, however, advise her to rely on her natural charm and optimism instead of worrying about magical abilities.
