As Artificial Intelligence eliminates jobs, Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasizes the need for everyday people to adapt: 'We must navigate through societal disruption'

Tech experts remain divided over whether artificial intelligence will trigger massive job losses or usher in a world of minimal work and universal income. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has now shared his perspective, warning that AI could affect nearly every professionincluding his ownand that adaptation will be essential.

AI is the most significant technology humanity has ever developed, with immense potential benefits, but it will also require us to navigate societal disruptions, Pichai told the BBC in a recent interview.

With Google recently unveiling its latest AI model, Gemini 3, Pichai has a front-row view of the technologys global impact. The new model, an advancement over Gemini 2.5 released eight months ago, has been praised by analysts and investors, with many calling it the companys top generally available AI model today.

While Pichai acknowledged that AI will phase out some roles, he also emphasized that it will generate new opportunities. It will evolve and change certain jobs. People will need to adjust, and some positions will be affected. Society needs to start discussing this, he said.

Contrary to the common belief that automation mainly affects entry-level positions like customer service or junior analysts, Pichai insists that all roles will feel AIs influence. He even described his own CEO position as one of the easier jobs for AI to eventually perform.

No profession is immune from AI. But those who learn to leverage these tools will succeed, Pichai added. It doesnt matter if youre a teacher or a doctorthese professions will continue, but those who excel will be the ones using AI effectively.

Advice for Young Professionals

Emerging professionals may worry about their career choices as AI reshapes the labor market. Job listings in the U.S. have dropped roughly 32% since the launch of ChatGPT, according to Federal Reserve data, as companies adopt AI to enhance efficiency. Employment among Gen Z in major tech firms has halved over the past two years, with some once-popular roles, like software development, seeing sharp declines. Even physical tasks are being targeted by humanoid robots, pushing young workers to rethink career paths.

Despite these challenges, Pichai advised that no specific degree or career guarantees immunity from AI. He encouraged pursuing ones interests while embracing the technology. I wouldnt alter the way we guide the next generation. Many disciplines will remain relevant. My advice is to engage with AI and integrate it into your chosen field, he said.
