The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has revealed the demographic composition of its 14,000 members, five years after implementing a major review to improve diversity and inclusion. The organization reports that it has nearly met all membership diversity goals established in 2020.
As of 2025, BAFTA's membership includes 19.85% from minority ethnic groups, 12.84% identifying as Deaf, Disabled, or Neurodivergent, and 13.29% identifying as LGB+. While the target for women members was set at 50%, the current proportion stands at 43%. Notably, 51% of new members added since 2020 identify as women.
BAFTA also began tracking socio-economic background starting in 2023, following guidance from the Social Mobility Commission. Presently, 19% of members come from working-class backgrounds, with 21% of new members since 2020 identifying in this category.
Looking ahead, BAFTA plans to raise the membership target for Deaf, Disabled, and Neurodivergent individuals to 18% by 2030, aligned with UK working-age population data. Additionally, it aims for 25% of new members to come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. The Academy will also examine representation of People of Colour in senior industry roles and focus on increasing women's participation in games and craft roles, where representation is below 40%.
Im proud of the progress BAFTA has made in growing a diverse membership that reflects the breadth of talent and experiences in film, games, and television today, said BAFTA Chair Sara Putt. There are areas where systemic challenges continue to limit opportunity, and we must continue to push industry benchmarks where representation lags behind the UK working-age population. Membership data will help highlight where underrepresentation persists, such as women in games and craft roles and People of Colour in senior positions.
Andrew Miller, BAFTA Board Trustee and member of the Disability Advisory Group, added, Inclusion requires effort and commitment. I am immensely proud of BAFTAs determination to improve disability representation. With nearly 13% of our members now declaring a disability and ambitious goals for 2030, BAFTA is setting an example for the industry on achieving meaningful change.
BAFTA currently has 10,000 voting members across film, games, and television categories. This year, 782 new full members have joined the Academy.
