This year marked my debut as editor-in-chief of PEOPLE, and reflecting on the extraordinary stories we've shared over the past 12 months, its astonishing how much we accomplished. Our pages featured intimate insights from icons like Priscilla Presley, Emma Heming Willis, Michael Strahan, and Charlie Sheen. Rare interviews included the likes of Billy Joel, Melinda French Gates, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
We celebrated legends such as Dick Van Dyke, Dolly Parton, Michelle Obama, and Demi Moore. A highlight was showcasing stars on the rise, exemplified by our Sexiest Man Alive, Jonathan Bailey, who emerged as 2025's top-earning actor with blockbusters like Jurassic World: Rebirth and Wicked: For Good.
As the year winds down, our coverage took on a playful tone. This issue honors the Jonas Brothers, who commanded stages nationwide in 2025, while also reviewing the years most memorable moments in pop culture, both triumphant and challenging, according to Andrea Lavinthal, executive director of special integrated projects.
During an interview in Houston, the mood was light until a brief interruption due to low blood sugar halted the conversation. I was mortified, but the brothers were incredibly understanding, Lavinthal recalls. Superfan and editor Alexandra Schonfeld stepped in to continue, calling it a dream come true to sit across from the group she grew up listening to.
PEOPLEs editors also reflect on their standout experiences from 2025:
- Michelle Obama: Janine Rubenstein, editor at large, describes a conversation that went beyond style and books, exploring Obamas personal growth and identity after the White House, revealing a confident and self-assured woman.
- Robert Irwin: Senior reporter Gillian Telling notes how Irwins charm and dedication to environmental causes made him an ideal subject, foreshadowing his victory on Dancing With the Stars.
- Heidi Klum: Style director Brittany Talarico recalls an energetic, joyful shoot where Klum showcased her vivacious personality and confidence, proving age is no barrier to charisma and style.
- Dolly Parton: Senior music editor Jeff Nelson describes her as down-to-earth despite her superstar status, humorously looking forward to complimentary resort amenities during her Las Vegas residency.
- Reba McEntire: Writer Daniela Avila celebrated covering Rebas milestones70th birthday, engagement, and 50 years in musichighlighting the singers warmth and generosity.
- John Cena: Senior TV editor Colleen Kratofil emphasizes Cenas openness about his career, wrestling retirement, and personal challenges, aiming to reduce stigma around hair loss for men.
- Jenna and Barbara Bush: Staff writer Alex Ross shares the joy of discussing sisterhood and parenthood, marking a personal milestone as his first cover coincided with his 25th birthday.
- Helen Mirren: Senior movie writer Eric Andersson recalls her appreciation for thorough research, marking a meaningful moment for any journalist.
- Priscilla Presley: Staff editor Brianne Tracy highlights an in-depth conversation about her memoir and life after Elvis, capturing her candid reflections on personal hardships.
- Emma Heming Willis: Managing executive editor Lizz Leonard describes Emmas resilience and empathy while navigating her husband Bruce Williss dementia, sharing insights that continue to inspire long after the interview.
2025 was a year of unforgettable stories, heartfelt moments, and remarkable access to some of the worlds most influential figures. Each conversation brought readers closer to the people behind the headlines, making this year truly exceptional for PEOPLE.
Reflections on an Extraordinary Year at PEOPLE
This year marked a significant milestone in my career as I took on the role of editor-in-chief at PEOPLE. Reflecting on the stories we’ve shared, it is clear that 2025 has been a year full of unforgettable moments, intimate interviews, and significant cultural milestones. From personal reflections to career highlights, we’ve had the privilege of capturing the stories that matter most to our readers.
We were able to present exclusive insights from some of the most iconic figures of our time, such as Priscilla Presley, Emma Heming Willis, and Michael Strahan. Their personal stories resonated with readers and highlighted their unique journeys. Our coverage also spotlighted rising stars like Jonathan Bailey, who not only earned the title of "Sexiest Man Alive" but also became 2025’s top-earning actor thanks to his roles in blockbuster films.
In addition to the profiles of stars, we also dedicated time to reflect on the year’s defining moments in pop culture. The Jonas Brothers took center stage, as their nationwide performances became a defining feature of 2025. Meanwhile, our editors had the opportunity to reflect on memorable interviews with figures like Michelle Obama, Robert Irwin, and Dolly Parton—each conversation offering a fresh perspective and deeper understanding of these influential individuals.
Through it all, we have witnessed the power of resilience, creativity, and compassion in the stories we’ve told. Whether it was Emma Heming Willis sharing her family’s journey with dementia, or John Cena speaking candidly about his personal challenges, the year has served as a reminder that the people behind the headlines are just as important as the stories themselves. As we close out this remarkable year, we remain grateful for the trust of our readers and excited for what the future holds.
