BLM offering discounted Christmas trees and firewood in western states

Dec. 5 The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) unveiled a new holiday initiative on Friday called the "One Dollar, One Tree" program, offering heavily discounted Christmas trees and firewood for those purchasing from federal lands. Until December 31, permits for Christmas trees and firewood are priced at just $1 per tree or cord.

A cord of wood is defined as a stack measuring roughly 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet. In addition, the BLM plans to open fresh cutting zones in densely forested areas to provide more resources, according to a press release.

Families are now allowed up to three Christmas trees and a maximum of 10 cords of firewood, though some locations with abundant supplies may offer greater flexibility. This program is available exclusively in western states and Alaska.

The BLM estimates that these initiatives could generate nearly $10 million in economic relief during the holiday season while also reducing fire hazards on public lands. "This initiative ensures American families can celebrate the holidays affordably while maintaining traditional practices," said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. "Our public lands continue to provide tangible benefits for the community, making this season brighter and more accessible for everyone."

Each year, the BLM sells between 30,000 and 40,000 cords of firewood. Public lands allow for forest products to be harvested for personal use, recreation, or supplemental income.
