Box Office: ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Sets Historic Opening Record with $57M, Prevents Post-Thanksgiving Slump

Blumhouse has returned to strong form as Five Nights at Freddys 2 storms into theaters, opening to an impressive $56.6 million across 3,412 domestic locations. The sequel now claims the biggest post-Thanksgiving debut in history, marking a major milestone for the studio.

Despite harsh critical reception the film currently sits at 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, below the first installments 33 percent audiences remain enthusiastic. The movie earned a solid B CinemaScore and delivered strong viewer reactions throughout its opening weekend.

Although the sequel is not expected to match the first films $80 million domestic launch, the comparison is difficult due to their substantially different release patterns. Still, the new chapter is heading toward several notable achievements: it is on track for the second-largest horror opening of the year behind The Conjuring: Last Rites, the biggest PG-13 horror debut of 2025, and the strongest December horror opening ever at the domestic box office, surpassing Scream 2.

Josh Hutcherson returns to lead the cast, with Emma Tammi once again directing the adaptation of Scott Cawthons massively popular game series. The sequel kicked off its run with a powerhouse $30.1 million Friday, including preview earnings.

In second place, Disneys Thanksgiving juggernaut Zootopia 2 is projected to add $45 million from 4,000 theaters, pushing its domestic total past $222 million by the end of the weekend.

Universals Wicked: For Good continues its run with an estimated $15.6 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic haul to $296 million. GKIDS anime release Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution follows with roughly $10 million from 1,823 theaters.

Rounding out the top five are two Lionsgate titles battling for position: Quentin Tarantinos Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair and Now You See Me: Now You Dont, each targeting around $4 million. The Whole Bloody Affair combines the two original films with an added never-before-seen anime sequence and includes a 15-minute intermission within its extensive 281-minute runtime.
