EU Commission to combat smuggling routes and synthetic drugs

On Thursday, the European Commission unveiled proposals to revise current regulations to enhance oversight of smuggling channels and curb crimes related to the misuse of medical and novel substances in drug production. The commission emphasized that drug trafficking poses a significant threat to both European security and public health.

The plan includes a strategic document and a 19-point action agenda, assigning a larger role to the EU border agency Frontex in detecting illicit drug shipments. Frontex will employ drones and aerial imaging to locate potential smuggling pathways.

Europol, the EU law enforcement body, will intensify its efforts against online drug sales and provide support to member states in their investigations. Meanwhile, the EU Drugs Agency (EUDA) will gain the ability to respond more swiftly to new drug threats and alert member countries. EUDA will also establish a database to monitor emerging trends in the drug market and assist in preventive initiatives, including treatment and rehabilitation programs.

Special attention will be given to shielding children and young people from recruitment by criminal groups, leveraging European experts' insights in preventive strategies.

Additionally, the Commission is proposing stricter regulations on drug precursors. Certain substances, often intended for medical use but exploited in synthetic drug production, will face trade restrictions. Compounds with no legitimate use beyond drug manufacture may be banned, with exceptions allowed for scientific research.
