EU Commission launches investigation into Meta's limitations on AI suppliers

The European Commission announced on Thursday the start of a formal investigation to determine whether Metas new restrictions on AI providers using WhatsApp comply with EU competition regulations. The probe will focus on whether limiting AI-driven services on the platform could harm competition within the European Union.

In October, Meta declared that AI providers would no longer be allowed to use WhatsApp for services where AI is the main offering. However, businesses can still employ WhatsApp if the AI application is limited to auxiliary functions, such as automated customer support.

The Commission indicated that the inquiry stems from concerns that these restrictions could block AI providers from delivering services via WhatsApp across Europe. Teresa Ribera, the EUs antitrust chief, emphasized the importance of ensuring that both citizens and businesses can benefit from technological advancements without dominant platforms stifling competition.

"We are examining whether Metas updated policy could breach competition law and considering swift action to prevent potential irreparable damage to the AI sector," stated the European Commission vice president.

If the investigation confirms that Meta has violated EU competition rules, the company could face significant penalties.

Meta is already under scrutiny in the EU for possible violations of digital regulations, including transparency issues and the handling of harmful content on Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, the Commission is evaluating whether the company adequately protects minors from addictive algorithms and other online risks.
