Hollywood Teamsters: Warner-Netflix Deal Raises Concerns for Entertainment Workers

The Hollywood Teamsters (Local 399) expressed strong opposition on Friday to the reported talks between Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix regarding a possible acquisition. Lindsay Dougherty, Local Principal Officer and Teamsters At-Large VP, issued a detailed statement addressing the implications of the deal.

Netflix has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Warner Bros., including its film and TV studios, HBO Max, and HBO. This development is deeply concerning as it reflects a continued trend of major media companies pursuing mergers and rapid billion-dollar consolidations, Dougherty said.

The Teamsters emphasized that Netflix, as the largest streaming platform globally, could significantly impact the industry if allowed to consolidate further. Increasing control over the streaming market threatens jobs, drives up prices, and undermines the U.S. entertainment sector. Consolidation driven by corporate greed poses a direct risk to union positions, the livelihoods of our members, and the future of the industry, the statement continued.

Competition has historically fueled a vibrant entertainment ecosystem, creating diverse content and providing stable employment for film and television workers. Before Netflix dominated streaming, both employees and audiences benefited from a competitive landscape. The expansion of these mergers, especially alongside the influence of major tech companies, raises serious concerns in a market already under pressure, Dougherty noted.

The Teamsters confirmed they will continue advocating against such consolidations at all levels of government and urge antitrust authorities to block this merger and any similar efforts that threaten to concentrate market power.
