Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is seeking public assistance to address acts of vandalism and anti-social behavior at one of its sites in Ross-shire. The agency reported that a car park near Contin has suffered considerable damage.
Officials believe the destruction resulted from drivers performing "donuts," creating deep ruts in the gravel surface. Paul Hibberd, regional visitor services manager for FLS, expressed frustration, noting that resources will now need to be redirected to cover the "expensive" repairs.
The agency also highlighted other issues at the site, including unauthorized quad bike use and a burnt-out vehicle discovered within the surrounding woodland.
Previously, FLS invested 20,000 in upgrades to the car park and the nearby Blackwater Trail, enhancing accessibility for all visitors. Mr. Hibberd emphasized that the damage caused by a small group of individuals forces FLS to reallocate limited resources for cleanup and repairs, potentially delaying other projects such as path maintenance, tree planting, and general site improvements.
He urged anyone witnessing such behavior to report it to Police Scotland with as much detail as possible.
The car park serves as a gateway to two trails and is a popular destination for families, elderly and disabled visitors, and cyclists. Each February, the site hosts the Strathpuffer 24-hour cycling endurance event, attracting hundreds of participants.
FLS is responsible for managing Scotland's national forests and lands, ensuring they remain accessible and well-maintained for the public.
