The annual holiday run in Guernsey will undergo route adjustments in the future due to safety issues. Linda Garnham, an organizer of the Santa's Christmas Fun Run, stated that local police highlighted hazards at certain points along the course, particularly near the Crossways traffic lights between Braye Road and Route Militaire.
Ms. Garnham emphasized that stricter safety measures will be enforced this year, including a rule that children under 12 must always be accompanied by an adult.
She explained: "The Crossways junction is particularly risky, and event marshals are not permitted to stop traffic. When the lights are green, vehicles have the right of way."
In the 22 years of the event, Ms. Garnham noted that no serious incidents have occurred. She also mentioned that the theme of the run has evolved beyond just Santa outfits. Participants are encouraged to wear a variety of festive costumes, including Christmas trees, candy canes, or gingerbread characters.
"Santa suits are becoming harder to find and increasingly costly," she added. "By allowing participants to create their own costumes, we can hold a judging session at the end, with sponsors selecting winners for best dressed."
The adult segment of the run is scheduled for 14 December, starting from Pembroke at 11:30 GMT, while the children's run will begin from Bulwer Avenue at 11:45. The event also aims to support Aid Reaching Children through its fundraising efforts.
