Police prepare for Wear-Tyne derby

Authorities have confirmed that preparations for the upcoming Wear-Tyne derby are progressing steadily, with particular attention being paid to the night-time activities surrounding the event. Sunderland will welcome Newcastle for a Premier League match on 14 December at 14:00 GMT, marking the first top-tier encounter between the two sides in nearly ten years.

Neighbourhood Inspector Jamie Southwell explained that Northumbria Police have developed an extensive operational plan, focusing on the period following the match and extending into the early hours of the night. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding local venues and managing any potential risks during this time.

Unlike the FA Cup meeting in January 2024, which required strict travel controls for Newcastle supporters, Sunderland has indicated that there will be no such restrictions for this Premier League clash. Previous derbies between the two North East rivals have occasionally seen notable disturbances, highlighting the need for thorough planning.

Inspector Southwell detailed that staff assignments and rest-day scheduling have already been arranged. Additionally, a series of preparatory meetings involving the police, football clubs, and the FA have been conducted by senior officers to ensure a coordinated response for the match.

He stressed that the comprehensive planning is essential for an event of this magnitude, particularly concerning licensed premises and crowd management during the night-time period following the game.

Liberal Democrat councillor Andrew Wood noted that allowing away supporters to arrange their own travel could add to the excitement of the occasion. Inspector Southwell clarified that transportation arrangements were outside his responsibilities and were not part of his planning.

The police remain committed to ensuring a safe and well-organized derby, balancing fan enthusiasm with public safety.
