20th Century Studios revealed a new premiere date for the upcoming sequel to The Simpsons Movie via social media on Friday. The film is now set to debut on September 3, 2027, coinciding with Labor Day weekend.
The announcement, also shared on the official Simpsons social accounts, features an image of Homer Simpson accidentally stabbing his foot with a flag. The flag displays the original July 23 release date crossed out, replaced with the new September date. In the same illustration, Homer is dropping a pink-frosted donut.
The original Simpsons Movie premiered in 2007, positioned between the shows 18th and 19th seasons. The television series has been renewed through its 40th season, with Season 37 currently airing.
Following Disneys acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, the company expressed interest in producing another Simpsons feature. The end credits of the first film hinted at a sequel when baby Maggie uttered the word sequel.
No director or writers have been officially confirmed for the new movie. The 2007 film was directed by David Silverman, with the screenplay credited to series veterans including James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Al Jean, Ian Maxtone-Graham, George Meyer, David Mirkin, Mike Reiss, Mike Scully, Matt Selman, John Swartzwelder, and Jon Vitti.
The original voice cast, including Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer, Tress MacNeille, and Pamela Hayden, are expected to return to reprise their roles.
