The Best Time and Way to View This Week's Super Cold Moon

On December 16, 2024, the frosty full moon rose majestically behind Rocca Calascio castle and the surrounding village in Calascio, Italy. This celestial event, captured by Lorenzo Di Cola of NurPhoto/Getty Images, marks the final supermoon of the year.

The December full moon, often referred to as the Cold Moon, is the third consecutive supermoon to conclude 2024. Observers will have a chance to witness this luminous spectacle before the year ends.

What Makes the Cold Moon Special?

Each month, the full moon is given a distinct name reflecting cultural or historical significance. Decembers full moon is called the Cold Moon due to the chilly season that accompanies it.

A supermoon occurs when the moons orbit brings it unusually close to Earth. At its closest point, or perigee, the moon can appear approximately 14% larger and 30% brighter than the dimmest full moon of the year, according to NASA.

There are typically three to four supermoons annually. In 2024, October and November featured the first two, with December presenting the final supermoon in this sequence.

When and How to View the December Supermoon

The December supermoon will reach peak brightness on Thursday, December 4, at 6:14 p.m. ET. While it can be seen with the naked eye, using binoculars or a telescope allows for a closer look at the moons surface details.

For the best viewing experience, find a flat, open space with minimal light pollution, ensuring an unobstructed view of the night sky.
