As the holiday season approaches, many Americans are preparing for trips to visit loved ones or to take a well-deserved vacation. However, this year, travelers might look a little differentmuch more relaxedthanks to a new political trend.
The Rise of Casual Airport Fashion
Last month, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy launched an initiative encouraging Americans to bring back the "Golden Age of Travel," promoting kindness to strangers, gratitude toward flight attendants, and a generally positive attitude while flying. One particular recommendation sparked widespread attention: dressing more formally for air travel.
"Let's try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come here," Duffy advised. Yet, many travelers have responded in the opposite way, proudly showcasing casual attire on social media.
The Pajama Movement
From cozy sweat suits and hoodies with leggings to full pajama ensembles, numerous travelers are deliberately choosing comfort over convention. One TikTok user posted herself in pajamas and a sweatshirt, commenting, "Me on the way to the airport after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told us to dress with respect." She added, "I'm NOT sorrycomfort comes first!"
Other travelers voiced their amusement or disbelief at the governments interest in airport loungewear. Some even claimed they now feel compelled to wear pajamas for their journeys, while others suggested they would only dress up when flights are more affordable and amenities improved.
Perspectives on Dressing Up
Comedian Michelle Wolf humorously remarked that travelers dress for the reality of air travel rather than the ideal, noting, "I should wear my nicest suit so I can sit in someone else's Biscoff crumbs," highlighting the everyday inconveniences of flying.
Despite the trend toward pajamas, some travelers support Duffy's guidance. Tamaya Garcia, 48, told the New York Post, "I think it's great advice because when you feel good about how you look, you're treated better and you treat people better." A few others expressed similar approval.
Holiday Airport Scenes
Even with some support for formal attire, many passengers continue to favor comfort, arriving at airports in pajamas, sweatpants, slippers, and sandals. So, as families stroll through terminals in matching holiday pajamas, its clear this casual trend is here to stay.
The real question for each traveler: what will you wear this season?
