On a recent episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg dramatically stood up from the Hot Topics table while criticizing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Goldberg expressed outrage over reports suggesting that an admiral was blamed for a deadly strike on a Venezuelan drug vessel.
"They threw that admiral right under the bus," Goldberg stated, emphasizing the perceived injustice. Co-host Sunny Hostin added, "The buck stops with the Secretary of Defense."
The discussion centered on claims that Hegseth authorized Admiral Bradley to carry out a controversial September 2 strike, resulting in fatalities, including two survivors of the initial attack. Goldberg suggested that lower-level officials were scapegoated while Hegseth himself might avoid accountability.
To illustrate her point, Goldberg left her seat and gestured toward the metaphorical "bus" under which the admiral had been thrown. Hostin remarked on the importance of true leadership, noting that real leaders accept responsibility for all outcomes.
Hostin also discussed the legal implications of the incident, referencing international law and the proper treatment of individuals under such circumstances. She explained that those who give or follow illegal orders can be held accountable, potentially facing court-martial or imprisonment.
In response to the controversy, Hegseth stated on social media platform X that current operations in the Caribbean comply with U.S. and international law and are overseen by top military and civilian legal experts.
A spokesperson for Hegseth confirmed that no further comment would be provided beyond his public statement.
This episode has sparked renewed debate over accountability in military actions and the responsibilities of high-ranking officials in sensitive operations.
