Ana De Armas Confirms January Filming For ‘Reenactment’; Discusses Unmet Goal Of Starring In Major Spanish Film: “Give Me a Call” – Red Sea

Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas spent a significant portion of her career navigating the Spanish entertainment scene before moving to Los Angeles in 2016 with just three suitcases, her dog, and limited English. Since then, her Hollywood career has soared, featuring roles in Blade Runner 2049, Knives Out, No Time To Die, Blondewhich earned her an Oscar nominationand Ballerina.

During a conversation moderated by Deadlines Diana Lodderhose at the Red Sea Film Festival, de Armas reflected fondly on her years in Spain, where she appeared in popular TV teen dramas. Despite this success, she admitted she had long harbored ambitions to star in a major Spanish film, a chance that never materialized due to her TV commitments.

I didnt have time to really do anything else. I really wanted to get back to films, but I just couldnt get my schedule to work with anything else. I did manage to do a couple films, but it was always in roles that were still teenagers, or like young girls, she explained.

My years in Spain, unfortunately, I didnt get to do as many films as I wanted to, and I love Spanish cinema and I love Spanish directors Every time I go to Spain, I say, Please call me. I want to work here. Im available, send me scripts, de Armas added.

She emphasized her affection for European cinema and her willingness to collaborate whenever possible. Transitioning to Los Angeles, even after gaining recognition in Spain, was a humbling experience. De Armas recalled arriving in the U.S. where her previous work was largely unknown, she didnt speak the language fluently, and industry patience was limited.

Her Hollywood breakthrough came with Eli Roths Knock Knock, co-starring Keanu Reeves, who later collaborated with her in Ballerina. Despite her rising fame, de Armas admitted to moments of imposter syndrome. When asked if her Oscar nomination for Blonde opened doors, she remarked:

Not really. I feel like some people think it was kind of a fluke theres still this sense of having to prove myself again somehow. Ive always sought out what I want to do instead of waiting for offers.

De Armas highlighted her pursuit of diverse roles beyond action films like Ballerina, emphasizing collaboration with writers and directors to shape her career. She has recently worked with prominent directors including Len Wiseman, Ron Howard, and Andrew Dominik.

Looking ahead, de Armas is set to film Reenactment in January in Los Angeles, directed by Grant Singer, alongside Benicio del Toro and Cameron Diaz. She expressed excitement about the project:

Im going to do this movie in LA with Grant Singer, who I already love working with through rehearsals and script work. Hes a very young director, but brilliant. Benicio del Toro, as always, is unbelievable, and Cameron Diaz will be part of it too Well be filming in January. Its top secret. They will kill me if I say more, she shared.

De Armas journey reflects both her dedication to her craft and her ongoing desire to explore new creative opportunities, bridging Hollywood and European cinema.
