During a career discussion at the Red Sea Film Festival, Jessica Alba opened up about filming a particularly uncomfortable scene in Tim Storys 2005 Marvel movie Fantastic Four. She described a sequence where her character, Sue Storm, appeared fully naked on a bridge as her least favorite moment of the shoot.
It was really humiliating, Alba said. I come from a conservative background and I am quite modest, so I dreaded it for weeks. It left me with a lot of emotional strain from that period.
Despite that difficult experience, Alba spoke warmly about portraying Storm, highlighting the characters groundbreaking nature in superhero films. She was someone I admired, Alba explained. Maternal, kind, yet strong and assertive with a clear moral compass. Back then, female characters often needed saving, but she was different.
When asked about Vanessa Kirbys recent portrayal of Sue Storm in Fantastic Four: First Steps, Alba admitted she hasnt seen the film yet, noting her familys influence on movie-watching choices. My kids often pick what we watch. I love Marvel films, though, and theyre always fun to enjoy together, she said.
Alba also revealed plans for a new collaboration with Robert Rodrguez, with whom she worked on Sin City and Machete. The project is described as an action-packed family dramedy set around a heist and will feature an all-Latino cast. Were currently pitching it to studios. Its going to be really exciting, she shared.
In addition, Alba is teaming up with Saudi director Haifaa al-Mansour on a story centered on the relationship between an aging parent and a daughter. She recently launched her production label, Lady Metalmark Entertainment, aiming to increase diversity and authentic storytelling in Hollywood.
Growing up, I rarely saw diverse perspectives in films, Alba noted. Hollywood often tells stories through a limited lens. As a woman of color, I want to support authentic narratives that reflect real experiences.
Alba emphasized that women, who control a significant portion of household income, are an audience that deserves better representation. Powerful female leads dont alienate men. We need stories where women arent always being rescued. The Latino audience, for example, engages deeply with entertainment, and its important to create content that resonates, she said.
She also discussed combating stereotypes about Latinos in U.S. media. Were often reduced to clichs like cartels or domestic work. To change these perceptions, producers and filmmakers need to tell honest, human stories that reflect the full spectrum of our experiences, Alba concluded.
