At the New York premiere of The Housemaid film adaptation on December 3, bestselling author Freida McFadden weighed in on a familiar debate: should audiences read the book before seeing the movie?

While many recommend experiencing the original novel first, McFadden revealed that her perspective is more flexible. I tend to be someone who likes to see the movie first, then dive into the book for the extra details, she said. But sometimes it can spoil the book. Ultimately, its really up to the viewer or readerboth ways can work.

McFadden, who served as an executive producer on the film alongside stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, previously mentioned that she nearly preferred the movie to her own book. The story follows a woman who takes a position as a housemaid for a wealthy couple and uncovers the family's hidden secrets.

In a September 16 Instagram post, McFadden shared her reaction after an early screening. She praised the adaptation and admitted she might enjoy the film more than the original novel. I was lucky to see a sneak preview of The Housemaid and absolutely loved it! she wrote. As soon as it ended, I told my husband, I think it was better than the book! She added that the film almost inspired her to write another installment in the series.

The movie, which stars Sweeney and Seyfried, is set to premiere in the United States on December 19.

The Housemaid is the first of three interconnected novels by McFadden, followed by The Housemaids Secret and The Housemaid is Watching. She is also known for her psychological thrillers, including The Inmate, Never Lie, and The Tenant.
